All-Consuming Passion
NRM partnered with Northwest Environment Watch (now Sightline Institute) to produce this informative booklet that tells shows how our patterns of consumption affect our personal lives, the lives of other humans and the environment. It also shows the hopeful beginnings of a cultural trend toward "low-consumption, high fulfillment" lifestyles. You may purchase it through The Simple Living Network.

Grant-making
From 1984 through April, 2001, almost $1 million in proceeds from sales of educational and other tools, study guides, honoraria received by staff members, and individual contributions were distributed to educational programs and to other nonprofit organizations that model and teach frugality, reducing consumption, and service. In particular, we supported grassroots projects where the staff walked their talk, finances were handled with clarity and accountability, most or all of the workers were volunteers and there was a recognition that we live in one interconnected world.

Most grants ranged in size from $500 to $3000 and were made to grassroots organizations. Please click on the selections below for information on many of the outstanding projects we have funded in past years.

As of 2001, our general program was suspended, in favor of investing in specific projects or our own, and in partnership with other non-profit organizations. We now dedicate our resources to providing new Financial Integrity program materials free of charge to organizations and individuals seeking to create and disseminate a system for achieving financial independence.

Conversation Cafes
From 2001-2007 the New Road Map Foundation supported the development and spread of Conversation Cafés throughout North America. Conversation Cafés are open, drop-in dialogue groups in public places where diverse people reflect together on meaningful topics. Conversation Café is now a project of Youth For A New World. For more information on this program, please click here.

The Simplicity Forum
In 2001 former NRM leader Vicki Robin came together with other leaders of the Simplicity Movement to form an alliance to expand the values and practices of simple living from primarily personal preference to powerful social and political drivers of change. NRM was the initial fiscal agent of what is now a stand-alone organization.

The ALS Patient Profile Project
From 1987 to 1994, New Road Map Foundation founder Evy McDonald led a medical research project into the psychological factors related to ALS survival rates. Evy McDonald, R.N., M.S., M.Div., a former intensive and coronary care director, was diagnosed with -- and recovered from -- ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) in the 1980s, prior to co-founding NRM. Prior to Evy's recovery, ALS was considered untreatable and terminal, and she attributed her recovery to a holistic approach to living, very much related to NRM's other work. Most articles and resources related to NRM's ALS Project and Evy's writings are available through the American Holistic Health Association. See Evy's article My Road To Physical and Fiscal Fitness on the Financial Integrity "Wiki."
